Description and Analysis

Braided Hair Cents

Description & Analysis

The final cent subtype introduced during 1839 featured this style known as the Petite Head. It is the first version of what is known overall as the Braided Hair type, and N-8 is the sole die marriage to employ this bust style during 1839.

The Petite Head carried on into 1840 and remained the sole type used through 1842. The reverse die of N-8 features noticeably smaller lettering than on previous issues and is also transitional in style with 1840-42.

N-8 is a very common variety, but it nevertheless draws some premium as the only Petite Head cent of 1839. MS BN coins exist in the few dozens, but those having more than partial red color are rare.
