Description and Analysis
Franklin Half Dollars
1953 50C MS
Description & Analysis
This entry has the second lowest mintage in the Franklin Half Dollar series and was always a bit scarce in circulation. Thousands of Mint State coins were saved by collectors and speculators, who perhaps were not even aware that it would prove to have a relatively low production.
By 1953 the master hubs for this coin type were showing obvious signs of detail loss, with Franklin's finer hairlines and the bell's more delicate lines rarely being visible after 1951 or so. This entry is thus very elusive with FBL, though ordinary strikes are fairly common through MS-65.
No varieties have been observed for 1953(P) halves.
