Seated Liberty Half Dollars
1881 50C PF

Description & Analysis

As in 1880, the proof half dollars of 1881 may be found with either of the two reverse hubs used for With Motto halves. Collectors of the time were oblivious to these varieties, and those of the present day show no interest in obtaining both reverses.

Deliveries of proof coins straddled the entire year, with 650 in the first quarter, 75 in the second and 350 in the fourth. Of this total, 975 proof half dollars were sold as part of the silver proof set, with the remaining 100 melted at the beginning of the following year.

1881 is another relatively common date among the series of proof Seated Liberty Half Dollars, do both to its high mintage and speculative interest in the low mintage halves of 1879-90. A fair number have been certified by NGC as Cameo pieces, but these mostly fall short of the gem level (PF-65 and higher).
