Description and Analysis
Seated Liberty Quarters
1886 25C PF
Description & Analysis
The mintage of 1886 quarter dollars for circulation plunged to a mere 5,000 pieces, making it that much more important to distinguish proofs from MS coins. According to the Briggs book on this coin series, the proof obverse die has the ball of numeral 6 nearly touching its loop, and the tops of numerals 88 are complete and bold. This is in contrast to the currency strikes, the obverse die of which was over polished, as these have weak tops to 88 and the adjacent base of Liberty.
Proofs of this date are relatively common within the overall series, with more than the usual number of Cameo and Ultra Cameo examples certified.
