Description and Analysis
Seated Liberty Quarters
1883 25C PF
Description & Analysis
The obverse die used for proofs of this issue features a misplaced date in which the tops of numerals 83 are duplicated within the denticles below 88 of the normally positioned date. As their is no second obverse, no premium is attached to this oddity.
This was the final year of 1,000+ proof mintages until introduction of the new Barber Liberty Head in 1892. The coining of trade dollars ended after 1883, and that action curtailed most of the speculative fever driving sales. This is another common date within the series of proof Seated Liberty Quarters, though Ultra Cameo examples are rare.
