Description and Analysis

Seated Liberty Half Dimes
1859 H10C PF

Description & Analysis

The Mint's proof production of 800 sets proved to be more than the market could bear, and an unknown number of these coins went unsold and were consigned to the melting pot. The actual net mintage is unknown.

The Philadelphia Mint half dimes of 1859 feature Anthony C. Paquet's interpretation of the Seated Liberty figure, and this was its only usage on the regular proofs. Liberty has a restyled head, her posture is more upright and the stars have hollow centers. This model was rejected for subsequent coinage, though it did appear on the rare transitional patterns of 1859-60.
