Description and Analysis
Seated Liberty Dollars
1872 $1 PF
Description & Analysis
Just a single die marriage has been identified for the proof silver dollars of 1872, and this is an usual situation for that time, despite this date's modest mintage. The reverse was used again in 1873, and it reveals clear doubling that is especially evident in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.
Osburn and Cushing estimated that some 575 examples survive across all grades. An examination of the NGC Census reveals that most fall into the range of PF 62-64. Gems do exist for the more advanced collectors, and modest numbers of Cameo pieces are also available. Ultra Cameo pieces, however, are extremely rare.
