Description & Analysis

This is another issue in which the mintage figure seen in catalogs is half or less of the total sold, but those issued outside of silver proof sets went unrecorded. The Mint did not have the same degree of accountability when it came to minor, non-precious metal coinage.

Proofs of the 1870s, particularly the minor pieces, were of less than stellar quality, and the example illustrated reveals a striated planchet from incomplete polishing. It is also an example of the Misplaced Date variety having the flag or base of a numeral 1 protruding from Liberty's neck. This is usually listed for currency strikes only, but clearly at least a few proofs utilized the same obverse die.
