Description & Analysis
The figure of 500 proofs is taken from the number of silver proof sets, which also included the minor coins. Additional proofs were struck for sale as minor proof sets.
All proofs of this date are of the Plain 5 variety (photos). This suggests that the Fancy 5 currency pieces came later, and no proof dies of that variety were prepared.
This is a scarce issue in proof, with most survivors being slightly dull and almost invariably toned with little or no cameo contrast.
