Description and Analysis
Walking Liberty Half Dollars
1946 50C MS
Description & Analysis
With the end of World War II the U. S. economy slowed drastically, and this resulted in a cut-back of coin production. The 1946(P) half dollar had a mintage less than half that of 1945(P), and this affect the number preserved by collectors and speculators. Even so, this issue is quite plentiful through the grade of MS-66, but the certified population drops off rapidly above that grade.
This issue is a rich hunting ground for variety collectors. A pair of bold DDO (doubled-die obverse) varieties are known, and the most prominent of three known DDR varieties is so obvious as to be included in popular guide books. Fortunately, it's also fairly common, making ownership available to any interested collector.
