Description and Analysis

Seated Liberty Dimes
1849 10C PF

Description & Analysis

As is typically the case with early U. S. Mint proof coins, the dies for the 1849 proof dimes were unique to this issue and were not subsequently used to strike coins for circulation. The obverse reveals slightly repunching of numeral 9.

There is not complete agreement on the number of proofs extant, with scholars providing figures that range from a low of four to a high of eight. The verifiable population suggests that the truth is somewhere in-between these numbers.
