Description and Analysis

Seated Liberty Dimes
1837 SEATED 10C PF

Description & Analysis

Coinage of this new type began on June 30, 1837, and 30 proofs were produced to commemorate the occasion. About two thirds of these survive, though most are impaired to varying degrees. This is the most available proof Seated Liberty Dime before the 1850s, but gems are quite rare.

All proofs are of the Large Date variety, as this was the first die marriage employed. These are usually quite sharply struck, though the example illustrated is a bit weak at letters ON[E] and DI[ME].
