Description and Analysis

Seated Liberty Dimes

Description & Analysis

This first subtype of 1840 was coined during the first three quarters of the year, before the Mint adopted the new Hughes interpretation. Its mintage was thus lower than usual for the Philadelphia Mint, and examples are slightly scarce in Mint State and rare at the gem level. Most coins are found well struck, except at the borders where the denticles are often blurred or incomplete.

There are no true varieties for this issue. Series specialists do seek one die state in which deep polishing lines at Liberty's neck simulate the appearance of a crude beard. This is included within Gerry Fortin's Top 100.
