Description and Analysis
Early Half Dimes
1803 H10C MS
Description & Analysis
Two obverse dies and two reverses were combined to create three marriages of 1803 half dimes. The obverse having a Small 8 was used just once, and this marriage (LM-1) is rare. LM-2 and LM-3 both employed the Large 8 obverse and are only scarce.
Like all half dimes of this type the 1803 issue was subject to very irregular striking quality. Some features will be sharp, while others may be quite weak or missing altogether. This is most noticeable where the deepest cavities of the dies are opposite one another, such as with Liberty's bosom and the clouds at upper right on the reverse.
