Description and Analysis

Silver Three Cents
1857 3CS MS

Description & Analysis

This is another date whose high mintage may be attributed to Mint Director Snowden's ill-advised and illegal practice of purchasing silver bullion at a subsidized price and dispensing fractional coins in exchange.

Unlike the example shown, most 1857 three-cent pieces were reasonably well struck, though they still suffered from frequent die clashes. The coin illustrated is faintly prooflike, perhaps as a consequence of repolishing the dies to diminish the obvious clash marks.
