Description and Analysis

Lincoln Cents, Wheat Reverse
1942 S 1C MS

Description & Analysis

The long suspension of cent coinage at San Francisco during 1941 was still being overcome in the early months of 1942, when that mint made cents alone through March. Due to restrictions on the use of copper, production of cents gradually dwindled during the remainder of the year.

Gem 1942-S cents oftentime have a slightly subdued red color, rather than the bright and flashy look desired by collectors. This issue has long been perceived as slightly more scarce than other cents of the 1940s in top grades.

Numerous repunched mintmark varieties are known for 1942-S, most of them quite minor. One is also combined with a doubled-die obverse.
