Description & Analysis
The speculative high sales of proof coins which typified the 1880s began to recede in 1889, and mintages of proof Indian Head Cents never again cracked the 3000 barrier through the end of the series.
The U. S. Mint's pattern of poorly made proof coins continued in 1889, and it's not unusual to find this issue with incomplete details. Evident in the example illustrated is another oddity of this date: A die-clash impression of Liberty's inverted profile may be seen within and below letter C of CENT. Coining proofs from clashed dies was an unforgiveable lapse, but it gives these coins a unique charm.
