Description & Analysis
The rarity of Mint State currency strikes for this date has put tremendous price pressure on the far more available proofs. This issue is actually not rare except in fully red gem or with measurable cameo contrast. Most survivors are toned to varying degrees, though they are less often seen with the streaky toning that results from improper mixing of the alloy.
A new reverse die was employed for the proofs of this date and periodically for the next several years. While quite superior to the Shallow N reverse used for previous dates, it has a deeply impressed right pendant to letter N of CENT that is a bit distracting.
