Braided Hair Cents
1845 1C PF
Description & Analysis
About a dozen proofs are known for the 1845 cent, all of them from the N-14 die marriage that was used solely for proofs. The raised lines on Liberty's jaw are from depressions in the die and readily identify this obverse.
Seemingly all or most of the 1844-49 proof cents utilized this single reverse die. Since its die state did not vary from one date to the next, it is almost a certainty that all such proofs were made at the same time. These backdated coins would have supplied the handful of numismatists seeking proofs in the 1850s and '60s.
