Description and Analysis

Braided Hair Cents
1852 1C MS

Description & Analysis

1852 cents are abundant across a wide range of grades, which is not surprising given this date's high mintage. Mint State coins in brown or red-brown are fairly plentiful, but most, like the N-4 example illustrated, have areas of weak striking or were coined from worn dies.

Some 24 numbered varieties were cataloged, but one (N-24) is a proof-only issue, and four are simply later die states of other marriages and have thus been delisted. Other than the proof-only issue, the sole rarity is N-23.
