Description and Analysis
Coronet Head Cents
1831 1C MS
Description & Analysis
The cents dated 1831 enjoyed a generous mintage, and die state evidence suggests that a number of them were coined over the next several years, as the Mint scrambled to find any useable dies. Examples grading MS BN may be obtained, but those having more than a trace of red are rare.
The transition from Large Letters reverses to those having Medium Letters progressed to the point where the 13 die marriages of this date are almost evenly divided between the two. The ML varieites do, however, carry some premium. No rarities exist for 1831, but N-4, -5, -8 (photos), -10 and -14 are moderately scarce.
