Draped Bust Cents

Description & Analysis

This issue was created outside of the U. S. Mint around 1860 to fill the demand for scarce 1804 cents. Though having no official status, it has long been sought as an accesory to a collection of U. S. cents.

A pair of discarded Mint dies, both badly rusted, were muled to create this oddity. The obverse is that of 1803 S-261, identifiable by its curving crack and crudely altered to read 1804. The reverse die is of the wrong style altogether, dating from 1820 (N-12).

Most of the restrikes were produced in copper, but a small number are known in white metal.
