Description and Analysis
Classic Head Half Cents
1811 RESTRIKE 1/2C PF
Description & Analysis
The scarcity of this date prompted a 19th Century restrike produced privately from discarded U. S. Mint dies that had become rusted. The salvaged obverse of 1811 C-2 was paired with the reverse die of 1802 C-2, and this concoction is easily spotted for what it is, though many collectors have embraced it as a whimsical supplement to the half cent series.
Walter Breen estimated that about a dozen of these pieces were likely made in the 1850s. The dies later turned up in the estate of famed collector Joseph Mickley, but it's not known for certain whether he was the person responsible for the restrikes. Nevertheless, they are known today as Mickley Restrikes.
