Description & Analysis

A brief but nasty economic recession set in toward the end of 1957, and this greatly reduced the demand for additional coins in 1958. Quarter dollar production at the Philadelphia Mint plunged this year, and speculators swooped down on this issue as the monthly Mint reports revealed the relatively low numbers struck. Examples became challenging to find in circulation, but thousands of BU rolls were preserved. Gems are plentiful through MS 67.

Those coined from retired proof dies display the Type B reverse, with letters ES of STATES clearly separated and the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM in high relief. These may be semi-prooflike from the polished surfaces they received while coining proofs, though the dies were sometimes used long enough for currency strikes that this reflectivity was replaced by the frosty texture of wear.
