Description & Analysis

The San Francisco Mint returned to wartime production numbers for the quarter dollar in 1948, though this would lead to none being coined there at all the following year. Like all S-Mint coins, this issue was widely saved by collectors and speculators. Thousands of Mint State pieces survive, and the certified population is strong through MS 66. As with 1947-S quarters, aggressive die polishing produced a number of fully prooflike pieces that are highly prized.

Varieties are few for 1948-S, with one RPM standing out as quite appealing.
