Description & Analysis

The onset of a postwar economic recession is evident in the greatly reduced mintage of quarter dollars at San Francisco, fewer than a fourth the number struck there in 1945. This issue was nonetheless widely hoarded by the BU roll and is not scarce. Indeed, there are large numbers of 1946-S quarters certified through MS 67. A few pieces have been labeled PL for prooflike, a quality imparted to the dies through aggressive repolishing to remove clash marks and/or erosion lines. This further points to overuse of said dies in an economy move. All federal departments and agencies had their budgets slashed after the war's end, and the overall quality of United States coins suffered for the next 20 years and more.

A handful of minor doubled-die obverse varieties are known, but of more interest are several repunched mintmarks. These are all of the Trumpet-Tail S variety, the only mintmark punch known for this issue.
