Description & Analysis

The Philadelphia Mint struck more quarter dollars in 1944 than it had in any year before. It would not again achieve such a number until the mintage of 1964-dated quarters was extended through 1965. This is a very common issue across all grades through MS 67.

As in the several years preceding, there are numerous doubled-die varieties, most of them affecting the obverse.

The obverse master hub was replaced starting with this year. The new hub of 1944 is most evident in the sharpened letters JS and in the date, the last three numerals of which are taller than on previous issues.
