Description & Analysis

San Francisco set a record for its highest production of quarter dollars this year, one that would stand through its last emission for circulation in 1954.Mint State survivors are common from the many BU rolls saved at the time of issue. Gems are plentiful through MS 66, with a fair number of MS 67 coins, too. A few of these are semi-prooflike from repolishing of worn dies to extend their useful life. These may or may not reveal raised lines on the struck coins.

Numerous doubled-die varieties have been cataloged, mostly for the obverse, and all but one are fairly minor. The normal mintmark for this date is the symmetrical Serif S, but two others have been found. Both the Trumpet-Tail S and the old Small S of 1932-41 are known for 1943-S. The former is rare, while the latter is extremely so. A few repunched mintmark varieties are known for the Serif S.
