Description & Analysis

The Philadelphia Mint just topped the 100 million mark in its quarter dollars production for 1942, a reflection of Ameirca's full-scale entry into the war. Though many thousands of Mint State pieces have survived, the hurried conditions (three shifts per day) under which they were made resulted in a lower average quality than for previous years of this coin type. Gems grading higher than MS 66 are elusive for such a large pool of surviving coins.

This is another issue that is rich in doubled-die varieties for both obverse and reverse. The sheer number of dies needed, plus the frantic pressure to produce them quickly, led to somewhat careless work. It's quite probable that doubled-dies which would, under normal conditions, have been pulled from use were instead used for as long as possible.
