Description & Analysis

With America preparing for the likelihood that it would enter the war, defense industries received rich contracts that greatly boosted production. The Great Depression ended in 1941, amid rising economic activity and employment, and this led to a huge increase in coin mintages. Philadelphia more than doubled its output of quarter dollars to a figure never before imagined for this denomination.

This issue was widely saved by the roll, and examples are very common in Mint State. Gems are plentiful through MS 67, but these grades don't always take into account worn or overpolished dies. Collectors are still advised to seek only well struck pieces made from fresh dies.

The great number of die pairs required for such a large production resulted in numerous varieties. The 1941(P) quarter is rich in doubled-dies for both obverse and reverse, some of them quite prominent.
