Description & Analysis

Though the United States had not yet entered World War II, the increase in supply shipments to belligerent nations gave the economy a boost that was reflected in rapidly escalating mintages. The 1940(P) quarter was made in large numbers and widely saved by the roll when new. Gems are plentiful, and collectors are advised to be picky. Coins well struck from fresh dies are desirable, as many examples display signs of die erosion.

Doubled-dies are known for both sides of this issue, but only the DDO is distinct enough to garner much collector interest.
