Description & Analysis

A setback in the economic recovery years of 1934-36 resulted in the San Francisco Mint coining fewer than half as many quarter dollars than it did in 1936. Fortunately for collectors of the present day, their spiritual ancestors avidly saved fresh rolls of each issue as released, and they placed particular emphasis on S-Mint coins. Thus, Mint State survivors are more available than the mintage suggests, though worn examples were always a bit elusive during the years that silver coins circulated. 1937-S quarters typically are bright and lustrous, with some revealing faintly prooflike fields from repolishing of the dies to remove erosion lines and extend their life.

The 1937-S quarters feature a curious anomaly not seen on any other entry in this series. The obverse border was broadened to the extent that it actually touched the date numerals. This must have been done to the working dies individually and was most likely performed at the San Francisco Mint's own machine shop. The net result is that, while the coins look fairly normal in Mint State, worn pieces proved much more durable in circulation. It's not unusual to find coins grading Very Good on the obverse and only About Good on the reverse. Unless some internal correspondence is found to account for this activity, the coins must tell their own story.
