Description & Analysis

As the declining post-World War I economy limited the need for half dollars in the avenues of commerce, the Philadelphia and Denver Mints essentially refrained from half dollar production throughout the 1920s and left what pressing needs did arise to their west coast companion. The San Francisco Mint geared up the half dollar presses in 1927 and turned out a respectable 2,392,000 pieces. The demand that the Treasury Department placed on the first regular issue half dollars coined since 1923 meant that the Mint was forced to cut a few corners here and there. As a result, this issue is typically seen with poor definition and myriad bagmarks. In his book The Complete Guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars, Bruce Fox even goes so far as to announce that he has yet to see a fully struck gem 1927-S.
