Description & Analysis

By 1927 the half dollars last struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1923 had been fully distributed, and production resumed. Reflecting the popularity of silver dollars and halves in the western states, this new coinage did not extend beyond S-Mint pieces. Most examples are quite poorly struck, and even the best survivors are deficient in this respect. Mint State coins of average quality are more common than for the 1923-S issue, but gems of this date are nearly equal in rarity.

The "Doubled S" noted in Bruce Fox's book is almost certain the product of die erosion or simple strike doubling.
