Description & Analysis

In 1919, the United States was just emerging from the first World War. This caused a slowdown in the markets, which meant fewer coins were needed. Therefore, mintages of circulating coinage fell precipitously in 1919 across all three mints.

The San Francisco Mint struck more half dollars than either of the other branches in 1919, with some 1.5 million coins struck. However, strikes were weak, and many coins circulated. Therefore, the San Francisco issue is harder to find in gem than the Philadelphia issues, but is much easier than Denver.
