Description & Analysis

The 1918-D Walking Liberty Half had a relatively large mintage of some 3.8 million coins. However, it seems that enterprising Denver Mint employees purposefully set the spacing between the dies slightly farther apart to extend die life. The net result is approximately 3.8 million coins with terribly weak strikes. This, plus the fact that not many were saved, makes this a very rare coin in gem. To date, NGC has only graded 14 coins in MS65 or higher.
