Description & Analysis

Just under one million half dollars were coined at the San Francisco Mint before new dies arrived having the mintmark on the coin's obverse. There were then very few collectors of current United States coinage by date and mint, so never particular effort was made to preserve these coins. Mint State examples are fairly scarce, with gems being particularly so. Many survivors are weakly struck along the vertical axis of the Liberty figure and the opposite features of the eagle.

It appears that most or all of this issue bears the tiny S mintmark used for the 1916 issue and retired this year. It displays a distinctive depression within the upper serif, and this serves as a useful diagnostic for detecting coins having an added mintmark. The latter always are of the succeeding style of mintmark.
