Description & Analysis

In 1917, the U.S. Mint decided to move the mint mark on the Walking Liberty half dollar from the obverse to the reverse. This change was requested by the Mint Director F.J.H. von Engelken as he personally didn't like the mint mark on the front of the coin. This created two varieties struck in 1917 from the Denver and San Francisco Mints. In both cases, the obverse variety is the rarer of the two.

The Denver Mint only produced some 765,400 Walkers with an obverse mint mark. Striking issues were an issue throughout 1917 at the Denver Mint. Because of this, both the obverse and reverse mint mark 1917 Walking Liberty halves are quite rare in gem. However, even though its mintage was much higher at some 1.9 million coins, the reverse mint mark coin was not as well produced and is therefore actually harder to find in gem and above.
