Description & Analysis

A classic American rarity, the 1876-CC 20-cent piece is known to the extent of fewer than 20 examples. All of these are Mint State or close to it, and they were clearly preserved as souvenirs by persons who may or may not have known of their rarity at the time. Nearly all of the 10,000 coins struck were still on hand when the order came to discontinue this denomination and destroy existing stocks.

All of the pieces known are from a single pair of dies, the obverse one being boldly doubled. Obviously, this adds no value to what is already a very rare and expensive coin.
