Description & Analysis

The 1884 Trade dollar is one of the most well known rarities in the field of U.S. numismatics. A mere ten proof pieces were struck that year, and no business strikes were made. Somehow, those ten pieces all made it into the collection of well-known Philadelphia coin dealer William K. Idler. Idler was friends with Mint Superintendent Colonel A. Loudon Snowden, and it is likely that he used that friendship to acquire these pieces. It was not until the first example was sold in the early 20th century that the numismatic community even knew of the existence of these rare pieces. NGC has only graded a total of six examples.
