Description & Analysis

The Philadelphia Mint struck just over 3 million Trade Dollars in 1877, one of the largest mintages for Philadelphia for the whole series. However, despite the large business strike mintage, this issue remains extremely rare at the gem level or above. The proof version, with its mintage of only 510 pieces, had one of the lowest mintages of the whole series and is much rarer overall. However, the average grade for the proof version is much higher than the mint state because it was usually collectors who purchased the proofs.
