Description & Analysis

So what happened to the 534,000 Trade dollars coined at the Carson City Mint in 1877? Numismatic scholar Walter Breen stated that 44,148 pieces may have been melted in 1878 at the Carson City Mint in his Encyclopedia, but this number does not account for the general rarity of this date today. The combined NGC and PCGS Population Reports tally less than 200 1877-CC Trade dollars in all grades. Obviously, the vast majority of 1877-CC Trade dollars were cast back into melting pots, either here or in China, both or somewhere else, as there simply are so few coins to represent this issue.
