Description & Analysis

It's not certain why trade dollar production was suspended for the year after April, leaving the 1876-CC issue with just a third the mintage of 1875. One possibility is the tremendous advance in the coining of fractional silver coins that year. The number of dimes, quarters and halves had hitherto been fairly modest at the Carson City Mint, but the Specie Resumption Act passed in 1875 provided for the retirement of the unpopular fractional paper notes with silver coins. Mintages of these three denominations rose dramatically during 1876-77 in response.

Whatever the reason for its early suspension, the 1876-CC trade dollar has become a somewhat scarce issue in all grades. Examples in the lower Mint State grades are available from time to time, but coins approaching the gem level are quite rare. This is the most difficult CC trade dollar to locate in high grades.

Since it was coined only during the opening months of 1876, it's not surprising that this issue is unknown with the new Type 2 obverse. Both reverse types have been confirmed, with Type 1 examples being the scarcer of the two varieties. Three different mintmark sizes are known for this date, each corresponding to different batches of dies delivered in this and previous years. While these are of interest to specialists, by far the most desirable variety is a spectacular doubled-die reverse that is most easily seen as a duplicated olive branch on a Type 1 reverse.

NGC Price and Value Guides Disclaimer

Disclaimer: The prices listed in the various NGC Price and Value Guides are compiled from a number of independent, third party sources in the numismatic community which NGC believes to be reliable. Prices provided are averages, not specific prices for individual coins. Further, because these prices are only updated from time to time, they do not reflect short term pricing trends, which are quite common and are often quite dramatic, given the volatile nature of the collectible coin marketplace. This is especially true for rare coins, where there are fewer sales and greater variations in sale prices. For all of these reasons, the prices in these guides are designed to serve merely as one of many measures and factors that coin buyers and sellers can use in determining coin values. These prices are not intended, and should not be relied upon, to replace the due diligence and — when appropriate — expert consultation that coin buyers and sellers should undertake when entering into a coin transaction.
