The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The San Francisco Mint produced 2,549,000 Trade Dollars in 1874, the first of the so-called common dates, although this issue is hardly common in Gem Mint State. This record mintage up to that time hardly translates to a common coin today. Nearly every Trade Dollar struck in 1874 at the San Francisco Mint served its intended purpose and was exported to China where most were either melted or chopmarked. Mint State coins are quite scarce, and Gem quality coins are excessively rare.
