NGC and PMG Remain Open and Fully Operational >
The NGC Universal ID is a four digit alphanumeric that groups coins based on a unique combination of date, mintmark, denomination and striking process (MS, PF, or SP). These IDs are a simple organization of all coins prior to variety attribution and grading.
The 1865 has the lowest mintage prior to 1881 with only 1,165 business strikes produced plus another 25 proofs. Akers estimates that perhaps some 10-12 proofs are still extant. Originals and restrikes are easily distinguished by the position and striking quality of the digits in the date.
