Description & Analysis

Production of the silver trime had fallen into a pattern by 1869, with just a few thousand coined annually. These did not circulate at the time, and precious few ever did reach circulation in later years. Thus, most of the relatively few survivors are Mint State or About Uncirculated. Proofs are far more plentiful than these currency strikes.

Most 1869 silver three-cent pieces were well struck, with occasional weakness at the periphery of the shield and star border. The population is divided between those having semi-prooflike fields and those from slightly worn dies having satiny luster.

A minor repunched date variety was formerly listed in some catalogs as 1869/8, but this seems to have been a knee-jerk declaration made about any date showing some repunching of the numerals. The roster of true overdates in United States numismatics is slowing declining as the years pass.
