Description & Analysis

The demand for additional coins plummeted in 1930, as the Great Depression took hold of the world's economies. Though more than five million quarter dollars were coined at the Philadelphia Mint, it's very likely that this mintage was produced early in the year, before reality set in. Many of these coins remained idle in vaults until needed for circulation several years later. In fact, it's doubtful that any quarters would have been coined before 1934 had it not been for the commemorative issue of 1932, which likewise remained idle for a few years.

The 1930(P) quarter is the most common of all Standing Liberty Quarters in any grade. Well made as a rule, most pieces are sharply struck as compared to the series average, though die erosion is evident on many pieces. Full Head coins comprise a substantial portion of the surviving MS population, some 50% according to Jay Cline's book. This entry has served as the ideal type coin for most collectors seeking a Type 2 SLQ, and it makes an excellent bookend to the series along with the 1917(P) Type 1.

The problem of rapid die erosion that plagued all Type 2 SLQs was well understood at the U. S. Mint. While the introduction of the George Washington type in 1932 was supposed to serve as a one-year-only commemorative of the president's bicentennial, its superior technical qualities led to adoption of that design as the regular type when mass production finally resumed in 1934. The premature end of the SLQ after just 15 years of issue, combined with the tendency of 1916-24 pieces to rapidly become dateless in circulation, made it one of the most popular coin series to collect during the second half of the 1930s. Sadly, the rarity and high price of the 1916 issue has had a depressing effect on prices in more recent decades.
