Description & Analysis

In 1919, the U.S. economy was reeling from the repercussions of World War I. Because of this, the mintages of the Standing Liberty quarter fell at the two branch mints, and to a lesser degree in Philadelphia as well. The country simply wasn't in need of more coinage at the time.

San Francisco's mintage of quarters dropped by nearly 10 million coins to only 1.8 million in 1919. The coins were often poorly struck and had a lack of detail in the head and body. This, plus the fact that many went directly into circulation, makes this date a very rare coin in gem. However, it is over four times rarer in gem with a full head.
