Description & Analysis

This is another high mintage issue that is very hard to find in choice condition. 1918-S quarters were poorly struck in most instances, with the dies being worn and, perhaps, set a little further apart than ideal to extend their lifespan. With the nation in wartime economy mode and the mints working multiple shifts, the emphasis was clearly on quantity rather than quality.

Nearly all 1918-S quarters reveal multiple areas of weakness, the most obvious being Liberty's head and the eagle's breast. Full Head specimens are very rare, and coins showing just partial head details are likewise very elusive. Die cracks are occasionally seen on this issue, but far less so than for Denver Mint coins.

1918-S quarters are more plentiful in grades VF through AU than one would expect, and this is due to the tendency of collectors to hoard S-Mint coins beginning in the mid-1930s. The Standing Liberty Quarter series was very popular at that time, as collectors were quite aware of how many pieces in circulation were already dateless. Those 1916-24 coins that still had readable dates were pulled from circulation over the next few years, else they would have been lost forever. A major retailer of coins dispersed a large hoard of circulated 1918-S, 1919-S and 1920-S quarters during the 1980s, and this group was probably assembled sometime around 1935-40.
