Description & Analysis

Midway through 1917, the U.S. Mint altered the design of the Standing Liberty quarter. The largest and most obvious difference was the stars to the left and right of the eagle were enlarged and three of them were moved to below the eagle, which was also shifted upwards. Additionally, chain mail was added on the obverse to cover Liberty's exposed right breast.

As with the other Type 1 issues, the 1917-S Type 1 quarter was pretty well struck overall. However, with a mintage of less than 2 million pieces, the coin is very hard to find in gem, and even more-so above that. Superb gem examples can be found however, but they are rare.
